Welcoming in the New Year: a Word from our Principal

As we step into the New Year, La Paz Tempisque enters a new trimester. This turn of the times marks a fresh start—a moment to set goals, reflect, and, most importantly, improve.
At this point, our elementary school students have settled into their classrooms and formed new friendships, our middle schoolers are getting into the swing of a more rigorous program, and our DP1 and DP2 IB students find themselves in the very crux of the curriculum. The school’s 11th graders have begun the second half of the year, diving headfirst into the hectic yet pivotal junior year. Meanwhile, our 12th graders are in the homestretch—finalizing papers, making revisions, and bubbling with excitement for what lies ahead.
To kick things off, we spoke with Chirripó Principal Mr. Ryan DeAustin (Mr. D) and asked him a few questions about how he’s feeling during this important period:
What are you most excited about in the 2026 school year?
Mr. D shared that he is most looking forward to the return of the school’s “remarkable” students and teachers. He also expressed excitement about the high school finally having a permanent home: “a designated secondary space through the combination of the new Tenorio and Chirripó buildings.”
What is one hope you have for T2?
Mr. D spoke with overall enthusiasm about T2. One major change this year has been the new cubby assignments, and because of this, he looks forward to seeing “increased interaction and social opportunities for students across different grade levels.”
What is one leadership technique that you implement in your job as a principal that allows you to make La Paz—specifically the high school—the school it is today?
As a principal, Mr. D is one of the most influential leaders in the Tempisque campus. In his role, which allows him to have such a positive impact on the school, he emphasized that he actively practices “active listening and shared ownership.” He added, “Both students and teachers have many great ideas and their own unique passions. When I listen to student and teacher voices with the intent to support action, initiatives happen, and trust grows.”
Overall, Mr. D, along with the rest of the La Paz community, looks forward to kicking off the year with a stronger sense of community than ever before. Together, we will continue learning with the shared goal of becoming better—both as individuals and as a school.

Recibiendo el año nuevo: Un mensaje de nuestro director

A medida que iniciamos el Año Nuevo, La Paz Tempisque entra en un nuevo trimestre. Este cambio de etapa marca un nuevo comienzo: un momento para establecer metas, reflexionar y, lo más importante, mejorar.
En este punto del año, nuestros estudiantes de primaria ya se han adaptado a sus aulas y han formado nuevas amistades; nuestros estudiantes de secundaria están entrando en el ritmo de un programa más riguroso; y nuestros alumnos de IB DP1 y DP2 se encuentran en pleno corazón del currículo. Los estudiantes de undécimo grado han comenzado la segunda mitad del año, sumergiéndose de lleno en el agitado pero crucial año junior. Mientras tanto, nuestros estudiantes de duodécimo grado están en la recta final: finalizando trabajos, haciendo revisiones y llenos de emoción por lo que está por venir.
Para dar inicio a este nuevo trimestre, conversamos con el director de Chirripó, el Sr. Ryan DeAustin (Mr. D), y le hicimos algunas preguntas sobre cómo se siente durante este período tan importante:
¿Qué es lo que más le entusiasma del año escolar 2026?
Mr. D compartió que lo que más espera es el regreso de los “extraordinarios” estudiantes y docentes de la escuela. También expresó su entusiasmo por que la secundaria finalmente cuente con un hogar permanente: “un espacio secundario designado mediante la combinación de los nuevos edificios Tenorio y Chirripó”.
¿Cuál es una esperanza que tiene para el T2?
Mr. D habló con gran entusiasmo sobre el segundo trimestre. Uno de los cambios más importantes de este año ha sido la nueva asignación de los “cubbies”, y gracias a ello, espera ver “una mayor interacción y más oportunidades sociales para estudiantes de diferentes niveles”.
¿Cuál es una técnica de liderazgo que implementa en su labor como director y que le permite hacer de La Paz —específicamente la secundaria— la escuela que es hoy?
Como director, Mr. D es uno de los líderes más influyentes del campus Tempisque. En su rol, que le permite tener un impacto tan positivo en la escuela, destacó que practica activamente la “escucha activa y la corresponsabilidad”. Añadió: “Tanto los estudiantes como los docentes tienen muchas ideas valiosas y pasiones únicas. Cuando escucho las voces de estudiantes y profesores con la intención de apoyar la acción, surgen iniciativas y la confianza crece”.
En general, Mr. D, junto con el resto de la comunidad de La Paz, espera iniciar el año con un sentido de comunidad más fuerte que nunca. Juntos, continuaremos aprendiendo con el objetivo compartido de ser mejores, tanto como individuos como escuela.
