Inside IB: Voices of the DP1 Students

Starting the International Baccalaureate (IB) program is one of the biggest academic challenges that La Paz High School students face. It demands focus, independence, and a strong work ethic. To learn more about this transition, we spoke with three DP1 students who shared their experiences during the first months of the school year.
The IB comes loaded with assignments, assessments, and very little free time. While they expected the intensity, they soon realized that discipline and organization are essential to keeping up with the fast pace. They’ve learned to plan, prioritize responsibilities, and maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal life.
Among all subjects, mathematics and biology stand out as the most challenging, though each student has found their own way to tackle them. They also highlighted the importance of their teachers, who go beyond delivering lessons to provide constant support and guidance. In particular, they mentioned Mr. Amed, their math teacher, whose dedication and willingness to help have made a real difference in their adaptation to the program.
Through this experience, the three students shared that they’ve developed skills such as responsibility, communication, and empathy, while also strengthening key values like perseverance and integrity. They believe the IB has taught them to think more critically and to work independently – skills that will serve them well in university and beyond.
Their advice for future IB students is to remain calm, manage time wisely, and persevere through challenges. As they put it, the IB not only challenges you academically but also helps build character, confidence, and the resilience to keep growing every day.

Dentro del IB: Voces de los Estudiantes de DP1

Iniciar el programa del Bachillerato Internacional (IB) es uno de los mayores retos académicos que enfrentan los estudiantes de secundaria de La Paz. Exige enfoque, independencia y una fuerte ética de trabajo. Para conocer más sobre esta transición, conversamos con tres estudiantes de DP1 que compartieron sus experiencias durante los primeros meses del año escolar.
El IB viene cargado de tareas, evaluaciones y muy poco tiempo libre. Aunque esperaban la intensidad, pronto se dieron cuenta de que la disciplina y la organización son esenciales para mantenerse al día con el ritmo acelerado. Han aprendido a planificar, priorizar responsabilidades y mantener un equilibrio saludable entre lo académico y la vida personal.
Entre todas las materias, matemáticas y biología destacan como las más desafiantes, aunque cada estudiante ha encontrado su propia manera de enfrentarlas. También destacaron la importancia de sus profesores, quienes van más allá de impartir lecciones para brindar apoyo y orientación constante. En particular, mencionaron al profesor Amed, su maestro de matemáticas, cuya dedicación y disposición para ayudar han marcado una verdadera diferencia en su adaptación al programa.
A través de la experiencia, los tres estudiantes compartieron que han desarrollado habilidades como la responsabilidad, la comunicación y la empatía, además de fortalecer valores clave como la perseverancia y la integridad. Creen que el IB les ha enseñado a pensar con mayor sentido crítico y a trabajar de forma independiente, habilidades que les servirán mucho en la universidad y más allá.
Su consejo para los futuros estudiantes del IB es mantener la calma, administrar bien el tiempo y nunca rendirse cuando las cosas se pongan difíciles. Como ellos mismos dicen, el IB no solo te reta académicamente, sino que también ayuda a formar el carácter, la confianza y la resiliencia para seguir creciendo cada día.
